Note to Self

I’m sorry no one told you what happens to idle minds.

I’m sorry no one warned you that the softness you cultivated while unbothered would soon be gentrified by symptoms of white supremacy and capitalism.

While you were clearing your head, urgency, perfectionism and time anxiety bought all of that real estate and built luxury condos for self criticism, imposter syndrome, and guilt.

Silly you,

Thinking rest was the answer to your ancestor’s prayers.

You must not have heard them correctly.

Black rest is necessary—but it is also fleeting;

A temporary reprieve between traumatic events and a utopic bare minimum from systems that demand your inevitable return to their never-ending cycle.

Black rest is everywhere that Black joy resides. Your ancestors knew this well, even if it was sparse.

I believe the word you’re looking for is liberation.
